aternaville. Reginald Jeeves is a fictional character created by P.G. Wodehouse.)
Character Demographics:
Fandom: Jeeves and Wooster
Name: Reginald Jeeves
Age: Somewhere between thirty-five and forty.
Physical Appearance: Tall, dark and well groomed at all hours of the day. He’s been described as “a kind of darkish sort of respectful Johnnie” and having “finely chiseled features”. He seldom allows his emotions to show on his facial features or in his body language – him raising both of his eyebrows equals an ordinary person fainting.
Education: Privately educated.
Occupation: Mr. Wooster’s personal gentleman’s gentleman.
Significant Other: None in the romantic sense at present.
Sexual Preference: Homosexual, though that’s a well kept secret. Being born into a society where homosexuality is a crime makes keeping such things to oneself wise.
Character Biography:
History: Born and raised in Brixton, London Jeeves has led a fairly normal life. His parents died before his teenage years but he was not left completely alone. He has a great many relatives – mostly aunts and uncles – who he’s on good terms with, so he has never felt abandoned after the death of his mother and father. He also has an older sister who he’s very fond of and whose daughter married a friend of Mr. Wooster’s not too long ago.
At the age of ten Jeeves began working as a page-boy at an all girls’ school and has since then had about a dozen other employments, his latest employer being Mr. Wooster. Jeeves being a skilled valet is of course a member of London’s respectable Junior Ganymede Club.
During his life as a valet Jeeves learned early on how to indirectly have his own way, without the people that actually were suppose to make the decision noticing. Jeeves also soon developed a very traditional mindset, which has led to him some quite imperturbable opinions of what is suitable or not, especially when it comes to clothes.
His time with Mr. Wooster has been very eventful. Hardly has a week gone by without one of the young master’s friends coming to Mr. Wooster’s home to ask for his help – or actually Jeeves’ help – with some problem or other. Jeeves has enjoyed solving these problems, but there have been others that haven’t been quite as pleasant. Mr. Wooster you see has the bad habit of frequently getting engaged to unsuitable ladies, often against his will. Of course Jeeves has always seen it as his duty to prevent such unions and has so far been very successful in his mission.
Moving to Canada will be another challenge. Jeeves is aware of the fact that life there will be very different, but Mr. Wooster’s comfort goes before his own (unless it’s a matter of ties, suits or other garments) so he has made sure to prepare himself for all the changes – though something tells him that the changes might be greater than he expects.
Personality in seven words or less: Intelligent, cunning, manipulative, romantic, calm, patient, pedantic.
How Others Perceive Your Character: Jeeves’ well controlled facial expressions and body language can make him appear distant and void of emotions to people who don’t know him. His talent of moving about without making any noise and therefore seemingly appearing out of nowhere at times can also unnerve those who aren’t use to it.
For people who do know him, reading his moods isn’t a too complicated task. His tone of voice and the look in his eyes can be enough to reveal if he’s pleased with a situation or disapproves of it.
One thing that always comes across clearly if one starts up a conversation with Jeeves is that he’s a very intelligent, well-read man. His skills at solving problems swiftly have often caused even the people who don’t much care for him to seek him out for advice.
Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: Jeeves finds great meaning and takes pride in his work. One of the few ways to truly offend him is to belittle his position as a valet. He’s very traditional when it comes to his views on clothes and how he thinks employers should act, in a general sort of way. As for rules and laws Jeeves has great respect for them, but he’s not above breaking them if it serves his purpose. The end justifies the means so to speak.
Jeeves is more often than not convinced that his opinions and ideas are the right ones, no matter what, and that his mission in life is to guide others – especially Mr. Wooster. He believes he knows what’s best for everyone. Since he’s a rather intelligent chap Jeeves often is right in his plans and decisions, which of course only has led to strengthening his convictions.
Reason(s) for Escaping to Canada: Mr. Wooster expressed a wish to leave England and for his relatives – especially Mrs. Spenser Gregson – to have no knowledge of where he had gone. Canada seemed an ideal location to disappear to as Mr. Wooster never had been there before.
Their DHAs [Dreams, Hopes, and Aspirations] for Canada: That Mr. Wooster won’t get in so much trouble there as he’s wont to do in England and the United States of America. Jeeves does find getting Mr. Wooster out of said trouble interesting and pleasantly challenging, but some peace and quiet on the behalf of Mr. Wooster would be welcome. Otherwise all Jeeves hopes for is that he’ll be able to find Mr. Wooster a good tailor in Aternaville.
Twenty-Questions for the Characters:
[Note: These can be one word answers or fragments. If any of you've seen Lipton's 'ITAS' you know how this works]
1. What turns them on: Well dressed gentlemen and interesting challenges.
2. What turns them off: Clothes he doesn’t approve of and most moustaches.
3. Would they see a shrink: Jeeves has never had – and will probably never have – a reason to do so. Though he might visit one if he or she is in need of help.
4. Worst Childhood experience: He doesn’t wish to tell. It’s nothing overly traumatic, he just considers it too private to discuss in this manner.
5. Favorite Film: None, though he generally prefers romantic movies with happy endings.
6. Favorite Song: No specific one. Mostly listens to classical piano and violin music.
7. Favorite Word: Indeed.
8. Least Favorite Word: Chaos.
9. Favorite Curse Word: He doesn’t have one. Jeeves has always believed himself able to express his opinions strongly enough without resorting to crude insults.
10. Best gift ever received: Mr. Wooster shaving off his moustache.
11. Sound or Noise they hate: Any musical instrument played loudly without skill can make him shudder on the inside. Most of all he hates any and all sounds made by a banjolele.
12. Sound or Noise they love: Waves lapping against the hull of a ship and the crackling sound of burning ties.
13. Do they know the answer to 64 million dollar question: That does of course depend on what the question is, but it’s highly probable.
14. [Complete the sentence] ... All the world's a stage...and all the men and women merely players. (Jeeves then went on quoting Jaques’ whole speech and managed to begin a discussion – more or less with himself – about “As You Like It” and other Shakespeare plays before he was reminded that he had more questions to answer).
15. Did Yoko Ono really break up the Fab Four: After some swift, subtle inquiries Jeeves came to understand that the “Fab Four” referred to a now disbanded popular music group. When he was informed of Yoko Ono’s relationship to John Lennon, Jeeves admitted that Mr. Lennon’s marriage was a possible reason for any changes that had occurred in the group. He didn’t give a definite answer to the question though. Since he didn’t know the specifics of the group’s situation before and after the marriage he didn’t feel he had the liberty of either criticising or praising their decision to marry.
16. Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee: Jeeves was mildly annoyed when he realised he didn’t know who either of these gentlemen were (not knowing the answer to two questions in a row is a very unusual experience for him). When he got back from his information search he proclaimed that as he had not personally seen any of the two gentlemen act he could not judge one to be better than the other.
17. Half full or half empty: Half empty. He claimed he did not choose that answer because he has a bleak outlook on life. It’s only that, when a glass (for the full question is usually “Is the glass half full or half empty?”) is less than full anywhere in his close vicinity its owner will usually sooner or later ask him to pour some more whisky or other beverage into it. Experience has therefore taught him to think of all glasses as “half empty” as a way of improving his reflexes.
18. Coke or Pepsi: He has not yet had the pleasure of tasting any of these drinks and therefore has no preference.
19. If they were a Jellybean flavor, which one: Mint (if there now is such a Jellybean flavour).
20. And, finally, if Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? Hearing: “Good that you’ve arrived at last! It’s a frightful mess up here,” would please Jeeves immensely, but he keeps that to himself.
